Chicken rice! Pizza! Assam laksa! Banh mi! Crepes! Burgers! Tacos!
I’m a big fan of hearty street food with robust flavors…
However, I can always, ALWAYS (but not often), appreciate the bank account breaking dishes that are delicately prepared with the highest quality ingredients.
BUT I’ll never be a fan of foam…
So you won’t be too surprised that I was surprised that after several days in Hong Kong eating Peking duck, dim sum, and countless bowls of noodles, Nadia booked us a table at Yan Toh Heen while visiting Hong Kong.
Nadia didn’t elaborate on our destination other than that we were eating downstairs so I looked through my bag for my best clothes (didn’t pack anything for fine dining). To say that I was sorely underdressed is an understatement…
We went downstairs and eventually found our way into the belly of the hotel to find Yan Toh Heen. Everything about the location, decor and staff screamed to me that I should have worn a tie… Or at least an ironed collar. Oh well…
Food is Love
Yes, my company was the BEST!
Their service was amazing!
That view was spectacular!
And the food presentation and flavor both truly shined bright (though I could always use more =D)!
Fortunately there wasn’t any foam served tonight. Nothing but a lot of solid cooking with special attention to technique that bring out the finer nuances of available ingredients. While I wouldn’t say that I tasted the grasslands in the pork or the depth of the ocean in the crab they were better examples of both that I’ve had and I’ve had plenty of both everywhere.
Like foie gras, I LOVE IT but I eat it sparingly for a number of reasons, namely health reasons mind you.
Even if I had the money or the inclination I wouldn’t, couldn’t eat like this more than a handful of times a year. But I savor each meal one bite at a time, especially at that price.
