A lot of places are natural stopovers for local sites. The local communities get bypassed for the tourist attraction, sometimes becoming worse for wear. And sometimes they pull themselves out of the gutter.
In Malang are a handful of villages trying to elevate themselves by making both their homes and their day a brighter place to be in. Since 2015, the more run down villages, with the help of 8 Communications college students and Indana paint, began to paint their homes in bright colors.
From slum to Instagram hotspot, this is our story of finding one of these Rainbow Villages.
Reminds me of the Clan Jetties in Penang which are similarly colorfully decorated.
Where Is It
Not that far from the Malang Railway Station, off Jalan Gatot Subroto, you’ll find the entrance to Kampung Tridi on your left.
What to Do
After making your way to the colorful entrance marking the 2nd village to do a colorful makeover, you’ll find a ticket booth to enter. At the time of this writing, the cost to enter amounted to less than $0.25 cents USD. You’ll get a key chain marking your
Keep your keychain! If you go to the other villages, you can use it to reenter, though you could also go ahead and simply pay again.
Then make your way through the village taking in as much as you can of the painted surroundings!

- Pose and take as many photos as you can
- Checkout the bridge connecting to more villages
- Engage the locals and get to know the people that live there
