Ever been to Bali?
It’s a wonderful place. With exotic environments and wonderful dishes. Would you be surprised if I told you that they had elephants too? I would have been if you told me. Apparently there’s this hotel that doubles as an elephant refuge… Or perhaps its an elephant refuge that doubles as a hotel. Either which way, it’s a wonderful experience to see these gentle giants in an environment outside of the circus that you may be more used to.
Mason Elephant Lodge! What else is there that needs to be said? The elephant hotel where the elephants are rescued from Sumatra to be raised in Bali.
Where Is It
As the story goes, we went into Bali’s central interior, away from the coast. We drove down this bamboo lined path to these large double doors where we were in Bali one moment and then in Jurassic Park the next. We were greeted by staff with flowers and a fruity drink, which I hoped against the odds, had a measure of alcohol. It didn’t.
After letting them know that we were to stay as opposed to a day visit, they checked us in, took our bags and walked us through a side entrance into the inner compound that is Mason Elephant Lodge.

Our park strictly follows the Five Freedoms of animal welfare, in which the elephants under our care are looked after to the utmost of our ability and are never subjected to any forms of cruelty. We have been gifted with the privilege of looking after these creatures and our mission is to give them fulfilling, happy and healthy lives.
- FREEDOM from hunger & thirst Ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour.
- FREEDOM from discomfort By providing an appropriate environment and comfortable resting area.
- FREEDOM from pain, injury or disease By prevention via vitamins and minerals and rapid diagnosis and treatments with 24/7 vet care.
- FREEDOM to express Normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
- FREEDOM from fear & distress By ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
Your Room
The room was of pretty much a standard affair. Elephant towel animals, and modern amenities as you would expect from any modern day themed resort. The gem of the space was the nicely framed, crudely looking painting above the bed. Crude only by human standards however amazing when taken into consideration that it was created by an elephant.
If you ever find yourself fortunate enough to explore this resort… remember one thing. The floating coconut looking mounds being scooped up out of the water are not coconuts
