You might not know it from first impressions, but some things like icebergs have a story to tell hidden below the surface. I couldn’t tell from my first walkthrough of Tugu Malang Hotel the history behind everything that was featured throughout the property.

I like this place. It’s not only a story of the hotel and the culture, but also a story about his life and family.

Where Is It

The hotel tour takes through the entire property:

• From the Lobby
• Restaurants
• Room Suites
• Art Gallery and Beyond

What About It

Everything throughout the property has a story to tell:

• A figurine might be a Javanese artifact
• That room might be a room that was used as a weekly gathering place for his family
• The hotel was host to every Indonesian President
• So on and so forth

A lot of artwork, decor, and names are shrouded in Javanese myth and legends. There’s a lot of history in every detail and it shows.

I Like It

I love the eclectic interests and directions the decor goes in while at its core centering around the owner, Anhar Setjadibrata, and his family’s history and Javanese culture. I identify with his sense of grandeur and imagine that he and I enjoy similar aesthetics.

You need to go on the tour for yourself and see what screams out to your sense of style and interests.
