The way we heard it was that there was some great coffee being grown and brewed in Luang Prabang. Who knew? In 2006, Saffron Coffee, a brain child of an entrepreneur and hill tribes, came to be because of a combination of events involving :
- Bird Flu
- Opium Legality
- Successfully Grown Arabica Beans Grown in South Laos
Turns out Saffron Coffee provides a viable financial opportunity for growing the much sought bean to 800+ local indigenous people.
Waking up groggily, we decided to head over to the flagship store facing the Mekong River for a pick me up. Showing up, we ordered traditional cup of coffee and a refreshing cooling smoothie.
Their iced coffee was great tasting and not too bitter. Nadia appreciated it’s flavor much more than I since I’m not remotely as experienced, growing up drinking caramel macchiatos. Nadia and I spent our time letting the world happen and countless motor scooters pass us by sitting roadside.
What is It
Saffron Coffee’s Espresso, Brew Bar, & Roastery is a coffee shop that showcases locally grown coffee beans helping to directly benefit the local hill villagers. They offer coffee in many different preparations along with plenty of food on their menu.
Where is It
Just off the Khem Kong Road running the permiter of Luang Pranbang skirting the Mekong River.
What to Do There
Go there for anytime you get the hungry urge. They serve it all; from breakfast, lunch and dinner!
Get there early and enjoy a cup of bean juice, have a bit of their desserts. Heck, if you have the time and no urgent appointments, you could potentially stay there all day. Get the rest of your day’s meals, snacks and pastries throughout the day as the sun makes it’s way overhead.
