Welcome to Singapore! Home of eating, shopping, heat and humidity. Nothing beats the heat like ice cream. And there’s no cheaper place to get ice cream on expensive Orchard Row than the venerable Ice Cream Uncles.

On any given hot afternoon, there’s one of two types of ice cream uncles on the street that you can differentiate by the color of their umbrella; red Walls Ice Cream or yellow Magnolia’s Ice Cream. They both essentially provide the same service and products at, I think, the same $1.20 SGD price. For all intents and purposes, they are paying to eat their ice cream.

The decision is clear… Get yourself some ice cream! And if you’re still thinking about it, the weather here helps make that decision for you.

In case you still weren’t sure… the answer is yes! Yes, you want some ice cream.

No Brainer

I never give it a second thought as to whether I want some ice cream. You, like me, might need a second to decide which flavor to get though. Each brand has their own selection of flavors and containers but they are nearly identical:

I haven’t eaten a ice cream sandwich that I didn’t like.

I’d be a bad friend if I did give my flip side opinion. I don’t mean to sound like an ice cream snob when I say this, but this is not the best ice cream in the world. It’s tasty! It’s not the creamiest ice cream I’ve had but it does the job.

We All Scream for Ice Cream

If you saw the prices of things here in Singapore you’d scream too, especially for ice cream. Given that on the same street they sell both Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream for 4x the price I’d normally pay for them, Ice Cream Uncle not only saves me from the heat, he saves my wallet too!
